Camino Nuevo High School (CNHS) opened in 2004 to continue Camino Nuevo Charter Academy’s mission to offer high-quality educational options for the MacArthur Park community. Our goal is to graduate students who are ready for college and ready to have a positive impact on the community.
At CNHS, all students engage in a rigorous curriculum in order to be prepared and eligible for a four-year university. Everyone takes courses to satisfy the University of California’s admission requirements. Many students also participate in our honors program for higher-level coursework in math, science, English, and history.
This dedication to academic success has produced exceptional results:
- CNHS ranks among the highest-performing schools (10 out of 10) when compared to similar schools.
- We rank within the top-performing schools (8 out of 10) when compared to all high schools in California.
- CNHS has an Academic Performance Index (API) score of 775; we outperformed the statewide average API of 755 and the Los Angeles Unified School District average API of 694.
- In the last two years, we have reclassified more than half of our English Language Learners to Fluent English Proficient.
- Our first graduating class, the class of 2008, had a 97% graduation rate.
- In 2008, 100% of all CNHS graduates are college bound, with 62% of graduates admitted to a four-year university and 38% of graduates enrolled at a community college.
Our students are learning more than academics; they are learning to be leaders in their community. Our school culture emphasizes creating opportunities for students to engage in social advocacy. Every week, student leaders facilitate our school-wide “Community Dialogue.” Students lead discussions on topics ranging from local issues like bullying to global ones such as climate change. We integrate these issues into the classroom, where students deliver presentations and write research papers. It is no coincidence that we have seen great increases in our students’ writing and reading scores; these results can be tied back to the development of our students’ leadership, public speaking, and analytical writing skills.
CNHS is housed in a specially designed 30,000 square-foot, 18-classroom building. The school is equipped with a powerful intranet to allow technology to be a prominent part of the learning experience. CNHS has a CIF athletics program, with girls and boys sports including basketball, soccer, softball, volleyball, and football. By 2010, a $7.5 million lighted soccer field and basket ball court will be ready for use by students and community groups. CNHS student life also includes more than a dozen clubs and extracurricular activities.
