Our Path to Success Camino Nuevo Charter Academy has grown from a single elementary school to a dynamic learning community serving students from pre-K through high school. We have partnered with parents, teachers, and local organizations to provide our students with outstanding and enriched educational opportunities so they, in turn, can transform our world.
Student-Focused and Results-Driven Camino Nuevo Charter Academy proves that all students can accomplish incredible goals when held to high standards, exposed to relevant learning experiences, provided targeted intervention, and supported in a nurturing environment with adult advocates. Both our K-8 and high school programs rank 10 out of 10 (10 being the highest) on the state Academic Performance Index (API) when compared to schools with similar demographics.
In 2007-2008, Camino Nuevo High School was distinguished with the Title I Academic Achievement Award from the California Department of Education. Camino Nuevo students continue to excel at the highest levels, even though many are considered low income and have learned English as a second language.
Our Learning Model We have created an education model that encourages student achievement through a culture of success. Key elements of our model include:
- Strong ties with our parents and community;
- High expectations for student achievement, including earning a college degree;
- Project-based learning allowing students to become active and informed social agents of change;
- Leveraging technology to bridge the digital divide; and
- Creating a collaborative and professional culture for teachers.
Assessment of Student Progress
To understand how our students are progressing towards academic excellence, we use a number of different measurements. CNCA uses data from the state’s annual standardized tests as well as our own quarterly benchmark assessments to evaluate student progress.
The assessment information tells us where our students are improving; it also shows us where we need to continue making improvements. We have made a number of important institutional and instructional changes based on test data, including
- Hiring a Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment Coordinator to assist newer teachers with key areas of the curriculum.
- Employing an English Curriculum Coach and a Math Curriculum Coach to work with our teaching staff to develop units and lessons targeting specific areas needing improvement.
- Offering special workshops that prepare our high school students to take the high school exit exam and integrating newly purchased software to help them practice for the test.
Our Results
Our overall results speak for themselves:
- Our K-8 charter has increased its API score for eight consecutive years, from 453 (2001-2002) to 817 (2008-2009).
- Camino Nuevo High School ranked in the top 10 performing high schools among all Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) high schools, including magnets and charter schools, with an API score of 775.
- Our first graduating class, the Class of 2008, had a graduation rate of 97%. This is an exceptional achievement, especially when compared to LAUSD’s graduation rate of 66% (Class of 2007) and a statewide graduation rate of 80.6% (Class of 2007).
